NEW RELIGIOUS IDENTITIES IN THE WESTERN WORLD

EDITED BY PROF. DR. P.S. VAN KONINGSVELD,

PROF. DR. W.A.R. SHADID, AND Prof. DR. G.A. WIEGERS

Processes of international migration have resulted, and continue to result, in the diffusion of many cultural and religious traditions towards the western world. On the one hand, the presence of these new traditions forms a challenge to the pluralistic nature of states and societies, both in Western Europe and the Americas. On the other hand, the vitality of these traditions is put at test by the imperative to adjust themselves to the new socio-cultural surroundings. We are witnessing many discussions by the cultural establishment about the social and legal space to be awarded to religious newcomers. In many countries, aspects of these discussions have become a political issue. At the same time, these discussions are accompanied, among the minority groups themselves, by similar debates about necessary adjustments of rituals, customs, and beliefs.
This series focuses primarily on the mutual challenges between minority religions and the socio-juridical structure of the societies at large, especially with regard to the main world religions, viz. Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, within the Western context. Special attention will be paid, on the one hand, to the influence of the broader social and cultural contexts upon the institutionalisation of these new religious identities, and, on the other hand, to the ability of these groups to maintain or transform their specific traditions.
Studies on other migrant religious identities may be included as well, provided that they contribute, by their methodological or comparative approach, to the study of the main subject of the series.
